Using Improv Comedy to Bring People Together

What is Improv?

Improv comedy theatre is a highly accessible art form that requires no props or prior knowledge, only the innate human sense of play!

In improvised games, exercises and scenes, participants experience how it feels to be listened to, explore characters, play with relationship dynamics and make friends.

What We Do

Making Things Up uses improv comedy theatre to build confidence, foster connections, and empower people to break free from social isolation. Within less than a year, it grew from a one-off project into a registered social business, and was shortlisted at the inaugural Arts & Homelessness International (AHI) Awards in the category ‘Arts and Homelessness Project of the Year’.

In weekly workshops, our participants are invited to learn improv comedy skills, express themselves and share laughter in a safe space. From the first season, the impact went beyond our expectations – the participants not only had their first experience of improv and co-creation, but also reported an increase in confidence. Some went on to take on volunteering positions, rekindle estranged family relationships, succeed at job interviews and take other steps out of social isolation.

In Manchester, we are currently supported by public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England to run our second season of workshops from 2024-25.
